Reading VIPERS

Reading VIPERS

Reading VIPERS is a way of supporting children with their reading comprehension skills. All children will be working on VIPERS during class reading.

It would be fantastic if you could also be referring to VIPERS when listening to your child read at home.

Each of the letters stand for one of the key reading skills that will enable children to become strong, confident readers.

The children will begin to recognise the pictures associated with each letter and skill - see below.

The children will start to get questions in their home link book on a regular basis. These questions will link to one of the VIPERS skills and should be answered at home. It may be useful for children to discuss their understanding of the question with an adult before having a go at answering it.

Reading at home

When reading with your child at home it would really help them if you verbally ask them questions to support their understanding of the book.
Here are some examples of questions using VIPERS.

What does the word ____ mean in this sentence?
Can you think of any other words the author could use to describe the character or setting?

Why was __ feeling ___?
Why did ___ happen?
Can you explain why____?

What do you think this book will be about?
What do you think will happen next? Why?

Who is your favourite character? Why?
Would you like to live in this setting? Why/why not?
Is there anything you would change about this story?

What kind of text is this? (story, information, poetry, explanation etc)
Why did ___ happen?

What was the first thing that happened in the story?
What happened after ____?
What happened in the beginning, middle and end of the book?
