Guided Reading

VIPERS

VIPERS is an acronym to aid the recall of the 6 reading domains as part of the UK’s reading curriculum.  They are the key areas which we feel children need to know and understand in order to improve their comprehension of texts. Whole class reading is the method used to teach individual children to become equipped and ready to answer a variety of comprehension questions. Children are explicitly taught the skills of reading (outlined in the National Curriculum and the KS1 and KS2 test domains). As a parent or guardian, it would be also helpful for you to be aware of these, so that you too can practice these skills with your child when listening to your child read.

EYFS

Guided reading sessions in Nursery are in small, focused groups. Children will focus on skills such as: holding the book the right way up, joining in with repetitive phrases, sequencing events in a story and predicating what might happen.

Guided reading sessions in Reception will have four focus groups. The class teacher will support a guided session using a focus text to develop reading skills. Each session with the children will focus on one or two VIPERS skills. They will then answer a question relating to this skill.

A teaching assistant will  support a shared book session with a group of children. They will focus on VIPERS skills.

Two teaching assistants will focus on 1:1 reading with the children.

Key Stage 1

In Key Stage One children reading skills are taught and practised using the VIPERS skills.

Guided reading sessions in Year One will have four focus groups. The class teacher will support a guided session. Each session with the children will focus on one or two VIPERS skills. Initially, the teacher will support a guided session using a focus text to develop reading skills. They will then answer at least one question relating to this skill in their guided reading book.

A teaching assistant will  support a shared book session with a group of children. They will focus on VIPERS skills.

Two teaching assistants will focus on 1:1 reading with the children.

Whole class guided reading is introduced in Year 2.

Key Stage 2

In Key Stage Two children reading skills are taught and practised using VIPERS during whole class reading sessions. During a typical session the teacher will share what the content domain/s the children will be focusing on for that session. Depending on the needs to the specific class this may be a targeted domain across the week or could include a different one on the VIPERS domains each day across the week.  For example, the further up the school there may be a focus on a different domain every day to revise, recap and master the skills prior to the end of Key Stage Two.

Whole Class Reading Lesson Structure
Teachers plan at least 3 key questions each session based on the content domain being focused on. Children are encouraged to orally rehearse the answer before writing anything down acknowledging their first answer may not always be their best. We use a maximum of 3 question each session to ensure children have time to provide quality answers. At times children are given sentence stems and vocabulary that is expected to be used within their answer. This will model to children within the early stages of securing VIPERS how they will need to answer questions in assessment situations and further study in secondary school.

Children are encouraged to provide evidence for their answer based on a text extract or a picture they have seen in the book. Where appropriate children are encouraged to use evidence from a range of different places within the text.
